BARTOW POLICE DEPARTMENT
CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY
The concept of the Citizens' Police Academy began in England in 1977 by the Devon and Cromwall Constabulary and met with immediate success. Citizens were anxious to learn of the operations of their police force which before were obscure and private. Through this program, the Bartow Police Department is striving to promote a better understanding between law enforcement and the citizens of Bartow. The Citizens' Police Academy is unique because it will be held in the community, so individuals from all walks of life can take advantage of this different and exciting program.
Participants are expected to share this realistic view of the Department with other citizens to improve the efficiency of communication with law enforcement through shared responsibilities and resources. The design of the program is to help the citizens to gain a deeper understanding and respect for our men and women in uniform, and to appreciate the complexity of the Police Department and the realities of law enforcement.
The Citizens' Police Academy is a 8-week, 17 session course, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. It will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with one Saturday session for Firearms Familiarization.
The Academy will provide a brief overview of the internal values, philosophy, and operations of the Bartow Police Department. A wide variety of topics are included in the Academy course. Citizens will examine training and related issues. Communications, Patrol, Demonstrations by Special Units, New Programs, and "hands-on" activities will be included. Participants will not be limited to the classroom. A Ride Along with an officer will be a part of the Academy, as well as the opportunity to observe in Communications. At the end of the course, participants will use their newly gained knowledge to uncover evidence in a "mock crime scene investigation".
Although the graduates of the Academy will not be certified police officers, we hope that they will become more aware of the difficult challenges and decisions an officer faces every day. Understanding can dispel suspicions and misconceptions and increase police/citizen rapport through education and information. The Department also becomes aware of the needs, feelings, and concerns of the community. Community involvement is the most powerful force any law enforcement agency has in the fight against crime, and when a partnership is formed, crime can be reduced and our neighborhoods will be safer places to live.
