Employment
Requirements 
(CFA, 12.04) The citizens of the City of Bartow depend on the Department for protection, assistance, and enforcement. It is the policy of the Bartow Police Department to select the best qualified and most appropriate candidates for employment. The Department shall hire without regard to race, religious beliefs, creed, sex, or color. The only hiring requirements, of the Department for a position, will be for the applicant to be able to meet the eligibility requirements of the specific position for which he/she has applied.Bartow Police Department is an equal opportunity employer and shall advertise as such on all recruitment literature and employment applications.
SWORN POSITIONS
All applicants for employment/appointment as SWORN members of the Bartow Police Department shall be required to meet the following standards:
1. Be at least nineteen (19) years of age.
2. Possess a current Florida driver's license.
3. Possess a Social Security card.
4. Be a citizen of the United States.
5. Be a high school graduate or its equivalent.
6. Must not be convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving "moral turpitude" and who has not been released or discharged under less than "honorable" conditions from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
7. Have fingerprints on file with the Commission.
8. Have passed an examination by a licensed physician.
9. Have passed a drug screen.
10. Applicants for certified positions must have successfully completed a Florida state approved police academy prior to being hired. (CFA, 4.03; 14.12)
11. Copy of FDLE state certificate and proof of passing state certification test.
(CFA, 4.03; 14.12)12. Proof of registration as required by Federal Military Selective Service Act, (males aged 18-26).
13. Applicant will be administered psychological tests by a licensed mental health services provider in order to determine emotional stability an psychological fitness. The record of the results of these tests will be maintained in a secure file in the Chief
's secretary office. (CFA, 13.08)14. The applicant will be given a polygraph examination by a certified operator.
(CFA, 13.07)15. Have successfully passed the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Physical Abilities test.
(CFA, 13.12)16. Shall not have used, tried, tasted, experimented with, or possessed any illegal
controlled substance within the twelve (12) months prior to application or anytime while employed by the Bartow Police Department.17. Shall not have used, tried, tasted, experimented with, or possessed any illegal controlled substance classified as a Schedule I substance (except cannabis) or Schedule II substance as enumerated in Florida Statute 893.03 within the sixty (60) months prior to application or while employed by the Bartow Police Department.
18. Shall not have sold or delivered any illegal controlled substance at any time.
19. Not have had their driver's license suspended for nonpayment of insurance nor for nonpayment of traffic fines more than twice during the sixty (60) months prior to date of application.
20. Must not be convicted or have pled to Driving Under the Influence (DUI), as defined in Section 316.193, F.S., during the sixty (60) months prior to date of application, no more than one time total.
21. Must not be convicted or have pled to Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a police officer, as defined in Section 316.1935, F.S., during the sixty (60) months prior to date of application, no more than one time total.
22. Must not be convicted of any of the following criminal traffic offenses, as defined by Chapter 316, F.S., during the sixty (60) months prior to date of application, no more than one time only.
a. Giving false information to a police officer.
b. Leaving the scene of an accident without reporting said accident.
c. Must not have accumulated more than twelve (12) points on driver's license during thirty-six (36) months prior to date of application or have a driving record that demonstrates repeated offenses and flagrant disregard.
23. A CJSTC guideline background check will be performed by a person trained to collect background information. The check will include, but not be limited to:
a. Local criminal histories;
b. National criminal history;
c. Driver's license history;
d. Educational history;
e. Military history (if applicable);
f. Employment history;
g. Neighborhood canvassing;
h. Reference contacts
24. Oral Review Board will be conducted prior to employment.
NON-SWORN
All applicants for employment/appointment as NON-SWORN members of the Bartow Police Department shall be required to meet the following standards:
1. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
2. Possess a current Florida driver's license (if applicable to the position).
3. Possess a Social Security card.
4. Be a citizen of the United States or resident alien.
5. Be a high school graduate or its equivalent.
6. Must not be convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving "moral turpitude" and who has not been released or discharged under less than "honorable" conditions from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
7. Have fingerprints taken and forwarded to the F.D.L.E.
8. Have passed an examination by a licensed physician.
9. Have passed a drug screen.
10. Proof of registration as required by Federal Military Selective Service Act, (males aged 18-26).
11. Applicant will be administered psychological tests by a licensed mental health services provider in order to determine suitability. The record of the results of these tests in emotional and psychological stability will be maintained with the background file. (CFA, 13.08)
12. The applicant will be given a polygraph examination by a certified operator.
(CFA, 13.07)13. Shall not have used, tried, tasted, experimented with, or possessed any illegal controlled substance within the twelve (12) months prior to application or anytime while employed by the Bartow Police Department.

NEPOTISM
No relative of a current member of the Bartow Police Department may be appointed, employed, promoted, or transferred within the same shift or division unless such assignment is determined to be in the best interest of the Bartow Police Department. Under no circumstances will an individual be appointed, promoted, or transferred to any position where a relative of the individual has direct supervision, jurisdiction, or control over the position.
1. In the event a relative of a current member is appointed or employed, both members must sign a Nepotism Letter stating that neither member shall be allowed to work under supervision of the other.
2. For the purpose of this policy, a relative shall be defined as: spouse, child, parent, foster parent, sister, brother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, stepfather, stepmother, stepchildren, grandparents, and grandchildren, of either the member or the spouse.
3. No relative, as defined, may work the same shift unless such assignment is determined to be in the best interest of the Bartow Police Department. Said assignment will be determined by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
